They are quite content with Amazon's fork which uses Bing. Facebook's fork would be no different. Facebook has dug their own grave. The sheer criticism for Facebook Home is a good example. Even hardcore fans of the platform are not amused with the constant pushing of content in their face. Plus the ads... Incidentally, The Verge reported that Facebook is considering pushing three video ads in one day on user's newsfeed. Good luck with that.
Facebook is definitely forking Android. But considering the quality of their mobile apps on Android. Good luck to them for keeping up. Also good luck keeping users happy with the sheer number of ads that are pushed in their mobile streams.

Another important point here is that Google has managed to keep most of their newer services advertising free. This is not something Facebook can afford to do. Google has been diverging into other modes of revenues. Facebook right now has nothing but ads that have to be pushed down users’ throats.

Facebook is seeking more than $1,000,000 to reserve daily slots for video ads, and advertisers can choose from four demographic targets encompassing millions of users. ...

Well. You are not looking at the bright side. I see two benefits…
Hardcore Facebook fans would be tempted to ditch iPhones for Androids.Borderline Facebook users would find more reasons to hate Facebook.
I think it is a good thing for Google overall. Android devices would get a very high quality optional frontend that operators would actually love to offer by default. They would still be the one powering most services (search, navigation etc.).
Not a big threat till Facebook is ready with their own fork of Android which is definitely coming.
The best news is that the app would be creepy enough to scare more users away from Facebook.
Yeah that is indeed the bright side.
:)

A Facebook fork of Android
Let’s see… It would not have the official Google Play Store. Not a big deal. It would also not feature Google Apps. Facebook would have to build their own versions of enterprise compatible services and tools. If they are only going to focus on the consumer side, they would have to provide access to third party app store. A version of which already exist.
Amazon has done well their mobile app store. But even they have not launched a smartphone yet. It is coming in the near future definitely. But how are going to cater to the users who wants to connect to their favorite ecosystem? How many people use Facebook Messages as their email client?
What about Microsoft? Facebook’s forked version of Android would become yet another challenger to Windows Phone 8. In fact a very lucrative one. I would not be surprised if Facebook phones manage to outsell Windows Phone devices in the US market lol.
Another thing. Facebook phone… Bandwidth requirements are high. Without constant access, the phone is as good as useless right? That alone would make it sort of a bad purchase in markets like India.

Facebook home is available on play store. Installed and uninstalled in half an hour. It's a data hog.
