My first Linux distro was Ubuntu Breezy Badger. Then I switched to Suse and then to Debian Etch back in April 2007 and now Debian Lenny.

Ubuntu was easy to use but I found myself removing a lot of unwanted packages from the default install. Suse was nice, however I did not feel comfortable with it.

What I liked best about Debian was the netinstall iso (about 150 MB only).
You then install your preferred DE /apps with one single line aptitude install .

You get yourself a rock solid OS that's snappy and has over 25100 applications in its repositories.

I've found Debian really easy to use and configure. Never had any trouble detecting hardware.

It does what I want it to do! :thumb:

heh right. that tells me that there is a demand for an online installer for ubuntu. that just installs the basic packages and the rest can be installed online. i bet i do not use 90% of the stuff that comes preinstalled with ubuntu. though having everything already installed is pretty cool. :)

Absolutely! Like having Suspend or Hibernate already configured and working on your laptop. The same with having OpenOffice installed when you have the need to use a spreadsheet or type out a document. The slightly annoying part is replacing pre-installed apps with your preferred app.Opera for Firefox or Epiphany. Smplayer for totem, etc.

My favorite has been Ubuntu. I have tried almost every other distribution, though.Advantages: Hassle free. Most of the things work out of the box.Disadvantages: Default theme (that could be changes in a sec).

Slackware not in the list? It's the longest running distribution.

Advantages: Hassle free. Most of the things work out of the box.

For some people, these count as the disadvantages. It isn't highly customizable.

It is time for Debian. Migrated my laptop from Ubuntu 10.10 to Debian 6. I am not satisfied with canonical's recent decisions (unity, no option for gnome-shell, global menu etc). I don't like Ubuntu's move from GNU/Linux to a free Mac OS clone. I want a GNU/Linux operating system. Bye Bye Ubuntu...............

I am using Ubuntu 11.04 , but it is giving me GPU Lockup problem . So I have decided to install only LTS versions . In this summer I will go back to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with GNOME and KDE [Choose while logging in ] . I'll try Elementary OS also .

Knoppix, Lindows & Sabayon are the only versions which have been on my PC for more than a day - among the three - Sabayon was the most recent of the three & a later version with more features than the other two were I think thats which my answer is Sabayon

The thread is little bit old, but let me say my opinion.. I prefer CentOS for server installation and Fedora for Desktop use. Both are from stable OS and there are free software repository available. CentOS works very good as a web server/visualization, where Fedora comes with all necessary Desktop/software development software(Fedora can work as a server too..).
