For Experts Only :: Why the router/modem takes 5 minute warmup time ???

Hi Experts

I have a Utstarcom UT300R2U router/modem provided by BSNL 3 years ago. I did not have any issue with it and its service with download speed.

Mean while I have relocated to a new address to other part of the city and after that all my problems now started.

Problem 1: The primary issue I have is, When I boot my PC+router, it takes approx 5 minutes to get connected after I click the "Connect" button on the connecting window !!! The message it shows "Connecting through WAN miniport (PPPOE)" and nothing happens and it keeps trying again within 60 seconds. After 5 minutes of this process, I get connected. Note that if I restart the PC without power off the router, then it connects immediately I press "Connect". Means once the router powered "ON" for 5 minutes, it can connect immediately. Pulling your hair ? Yes, I'm doing that for this typical problem.

Problem 2: Even though there is a dedicated server inside our society, I'm having very poor download speed of max 120KBps, which was earlier (at my old address) approx 230KBps !

Problem 3: I'm experiencing packet loss while browsing. Sometimes when I click on a link while browsing nothing happens and the browser statusbar says "Lookingup/Waiting for www.blahblah.com" and the internet LED goes off in router and after few seconds the LED starts glowing and the link opens.

Problem 4: When I dignose the router at 192.168.1.1 2 tests gets failed (earlier all tests were passing). The tests are: "Test ATM OAM F5 segment ping" and "Test ATM OAM F5 end-to-end ping"


Here is my setup which may give you any clue to investigate ...
Intel DualCore E5400, 1GB RAM, Asus P5KPL-AM/PS motherboard, 320GB HDD

Request you to help me out. If you need further explanation I'm ready to provide that.
 
Problem #1 : It seems you are in Bridged mode, (you connect via your PC). Change that to PPoE via your router setup page. Refer your router manual for assistance.

Problem #2 : Post your SNR/Margin and Attenuation values.

Problem #3 : If it takes a long time to actually look-up the domain (like : looking up blabla.com.....after a long time even though ur DSL light is on), use either Google DNS (8.8.8.8 - and - 8.8.4.4) or Open DNS (208.67.222.222 - and - 208.67.220.220)

Problem #4 : Same as posting your SNR/margin and Attenuation values. If they are worse, your line has be checked by BSNL.

Not clear. All residents sharing a single Internet connection ?

temp solution : replace the Power adapter for Ut300R2U.
( The Reservoir/Electrolytic Condenser inside could have gone dry)
Mention the power rating secondary AC or DC Voltage / current.
 
ADSL routers shouldn't take so long to start up - has it done this for all 3 years, or is this relatively recent?Similarly, the router may be rebooting itself due to some hardware problem (cheap capacitors, overheating, something stupid like that) and/or the router may need replacing due to a faulty component.Need those values to try and pinpoint the problem though.

Problem #1: Yes, I'm in bridge mode as it was earlier. I may not change it to always ON because I'm on a volume based plan

There is a dedicated server in our server serving each and every subscriber to their own connection/plan individually. BSNL has setup it as I live in a famous society of retired defense officers. Yes, I can agree with you for the power adapter. And infact took the modem and adapter to BSNL office and the concerned officer checked both the devices infront of me and surprisingly the devices behave normally !!! And the officer also changed my port through local NIB. Still the problem is there :(

NO, I was using it for the past 3 years flawlessly. All these problems started when I'm shifted to new address.

One thing I have observed that, after OS login, I'm getting the security notification balloon after 5 minutes (regarding automatic updates, firewall) and after that the modem connects immediately. Do you think that security process/service blocking the connection until it finishes its tasks ?

1. My Firefox 3.6.3 opens within 3-4 seconds of click from quick lunch
2. I'm already using CCleaner and as you asked now I ran it and it removed 50MB
3. I'm UN-AWARE of the application and now downloaded and ran it and it does something (atleast showing finding problem and fixing them)
4. Same within 3-4 seconds my FF opens
5. Ready to provide any info

My desktop become ready after 25 seconds from power ON and as I do not have any startup applications (except AVAST AV,HD Audio, WordWeb) nothings shows in my taskbar.

I'm planning to try my router in another laptop/PC, then I can see where is the problem exactly, is it with my PC/hardware or with the router/modem.
 
Just for testing purposes.... try inputting the id pass in the modem/router and let it run in pppoe mode.Check the wan tab in the router page and note how long it takes to show the ip address (the one which gets assigned to you after you connect)Then try browsing the net. Does it work ?You could also try resetting the modem by clicking the reset button for 10seconds.Then set it up again.ALso you could try getting the modem to your neighbours place and check it on thier pcs by using bridge mode.Ofcourse you will need to use "their" id passes while on their system.Tell them you are just troubleshooting.It shouldnt be a problem. this will rule out the router fault.If its a router fault then it will behave same way as it behaves on your system.Then you can concentrate on setting your pc straight.:)
