German Court Rules Internet Essential, Orders ISPs to Compensate Cut Off Customers

A German court ruled on Thursday that Internet is an essential service and if it is disrupted, people have the right to reimbursement from their Internet service provider.
According to a report by Reuters, the ruling comes after The Federal Court of Justice heard the case of a man who couldn’t use his DSL connection for two months in late 2008 and early 2009.
German law mandates that the loss of use of essential material items can be compensated. Like web hosting providers, some ISPs have a service level agreement that guarantees uptime, and provides refunds if it fails to meet the requirements.
The debate around whether or not Internet is a human right is constantly evolving, and in 2011, after more than 88 percent of ISPs were cut off in Egypt, the United Nations declared that cutting off access to the Internet is a human rights violation.

I am also for making all businesses to have website providing option to order online. In a country like India this can make a huge impact.

making a thing compulsory does not solve the core problems with the thing. indian government established right to education. and it has been a disaster. kids are not automatically getting quality education. instead, the quality of education is going down. there is a long way before internet can be considered a basic need in this country. these things work in developed countries where they have sorted out more elementary things like health etc.
