Allow and recognize are different things. If for example you have an id mhsabir[at]gmail.com then all mail sent to mh.sabir or mhsa.bir [at] gmail will also be sent to you. At least this is what I remember.

They did allow to create dot accounts earlier.
I have an account [email protected] and [email protected]
But this was when it was launched and was created then. Both ids can be logged in using different passwords.
