Erasing? It shouldn't erase anything unless you are into actual recovery mode, which by your description, is not a case.

i mean right now its showing the green android standing with circling thingy in his stomach. google tells me that this is a pretty widespread issue. erasing process can take as long as 2-3 hours.

i was actually trying to reset my device. it was encrypted which might be causing the delays.

Yes, if its encrypted, it will take hour or two to get formatted.

maybe i should have picked up the option to reset the device from the recovery mode? can i even enter the recovery mode if the device is encrypted?

It should be possible. And formatting too should be quicker.
