Anyone who uses Chrome OS along with Windows machine is bound to be using a bunch of Chrome Apps. This is a classic case of:
google launching something cool.
google failing to promote it to normal folks.
normal folks have no idea something cool is available.
google notices that normal folks are not using this cool thing.
cool thing is unpopular.
cool thing gets dumped.
I am sure most people here have no idea what chrome packaged apps are. It's Google's fault that people are not aware of the cool stuff that developers around the world have developed for Chrome. And no, not all of them develop these to target the Chrome OS user base... They know they have access to millions (billion+?) of users globally who are using Chrome on Windows/MacOS/Linux.
I use none of them, because I never knew about it. But won't some or all of them be accessible through Browser.
I use Gmail, Keep and of course Search through Browser.
as of now... keep in browser does not work offline. gmail and drive (docs/sheets/slides) require apps to provide offline functionality. chrome secure shell and chrome remote i believe also cannot work inside the browser. there are tons of similar apps catering to different users who cannot work inside the browser as they use extra features that chrome provides for packaged apps.
try using hangouts within the browser and you would realize why the user experience is so poor.
the other problem with this is that google is recommending developers to switch to an alternative like electron. using electron means that every app would have a download size of more than 50MBs as it would download an entire browser which chrome apps do not need as they use the same chrome engine.
simplenote desktop app on windows use electron and it is a 50MB+ app. every update requires the full download. if automattic had created a chrome packaged app, it would hardly be 2-3MB.
lol. chromebooks outsell macbooks in usa. they are the most popular computing device in american schools. and the only segment of the pc market that continues to grow. and the fact that they run android apps now is only going to make them more popular as they gain a lot of apps that were not possible earlier like mobile versions of microsoft office.
If only they launch something that people can run on PCs. I would like to give Chrome OS a try. I know older Chromium OS builds are available but the last time when I tried it didn't boot at all.
