Google is paying France Telecom-Orange to carry their data #absurd

If true, Google is setting a very bad precedent here. France Telecom-Orange claims Google pays them for the data accessed by users in African countries. Perhaps the first time we have heard about a major internet company paying an ISP to offer preferential support for their services.

sounds like that. though it might be a bit different as in. offering data hosted on local servers that do not require international data transfer. sort of like paying to mobile companies to offer better connectivity to their local CDNs. so that even if international connectivity is weak, their own content is accessible with good connectivity. whatever the intentions of google maybe, it sets a very bad example and gives an excuse for isps and mobile operators to start asking for similar deals.

So now the ISPs are like broker service, want to have comission from both the sides. I am sure google or any other content service provider would have a ISP or a POP of submarine cable and they would be paying for the same and finally there would be some contract between their ISP and our ISP and revenue sharing model. Maybe GOOGLE would have taken some bulk / premium bandwidth from orange for their backbone/ african POP and the same would have been wrongly interpreted by the CXOs / journalists. Bandwidth includes both upload and download and end customer pay for the same, so orange is actually getting revenue due to those bulk youtube data being used by their consumers why would they ask google to pay for the same. isn't it like double billing????

local CDNs are a fairly common thing so this is definitely different.
