I am more interested in merging multiple accounts. When Gmail was not launched, I had Google account based on my Yahoo id.Now I want to merge that Google account with my Gmail account without losing data in that Google account.

I had Google account based on my Yahoo id.

makes no sense. how can you check your gmail with an id ending with @yahoo.com :P

i guess you are talking about data connected to your previous account like comments posted on youtube and blogs?

most google services that previously allowed connectivity with a third party ID allows for connectivity with your newly created google account.

i merged by account on YouTube with my Google account when google acquired YouTube.

same case with Feedburner and some other services as well.

no when Gmail didnt exist. Google allowed u to create Google account based on ur existing email.this is when i created 100s of Google Alerts on that ID.then came Gmail, and I created Gmail account. But now I cant associate those alerts with Gmail ID. Only option to manually recreate those 100s of alerts. What is more sad is Google allows to export Google alerts, but there is no feature to import it :D

multiple account option available in my gmail from today. yet to check out whether worth or not
