judging from the video, The one problem with wave is that to truly take full advantage of Wave all of the participating users must have a google wave account. That means having to abandon their existing email accounts.Am I wrong on assuming this?

ahem. google wave is connected to your google account. and of course. every one would need to have a google wave account to get connected to any particular wave. it's not a separate email account. it's like a google service that uses its account. so if you have a google account... you are likely to have access to wave in the near future (when invites are more freely available). and since the product is largely open source, i see similar setups provided by other operators. we might soon have facebook connect working with google wave enabling you to connect to it with your facebook account and so on.

I meant non-google accounts. I should have specified that.

I think Wave has potential but it will take time to take off.

I think it will reach maturity only when people will be able to use their existing email/communication accounts with google wave.

One should be able to participate in a wave irrespective of the fact that they may be communicating through different email accounts. Only then Wave will become practical.

One cannot realistically expect a large chunk of users to migrate to a google account just to use Wave.

oh well in case you did not notice you can have a google account with your hotmail or yahoo or any other email id.

you can use that to connect to google services. :)

you are not forced to use your gmail account for most google service. i think.

google wave might require you to have a gmail account though. :(

----------

umm...

i would have to check what i just said. i think i got confused a bit.

I can? did not know that. But, if wave requires a gmail account, that will be a BIG negative IMO. Wave seems like a work collobarative tool. No way are people going to lave their existing work email accounts. That is a big no-no.

https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount

right. you can use any email id to make a google account.

i hope you can use this to connect to google wave.

----------

but the fact remains that since it is an open source platform, there would be ways to get connected to it using third party services.

and anyone would be able to host their own Wave powered services. i bet facebook and the likes would jump in to provide their own platform.

----------

google would want this tool to be used by corporations. so i am betting that they would make it possible for people with corporate email ids to connect to it.

That's what I think.I think google wave will allow people with non-gmail accounts to collaborate. That makes sense.I guess we will know only know when we actually get a wave account.Hopefully I will get it by Monday. :ashamed:

yeap me too. i still have not been able to get in. and from the responses on this thread i don't think anyone on this forum has. or maybe they are hiding ;)

So would it be right to guess that wave would be avialable freely in about a year

A year is a long time.

I think it will be available freely by the end of this year by the most.
