A GNU Dawn writes
"The GPL v3 has just been released. Among other things, the released version grandfathers in the Novell deal so that Microsoft's SLES coupons will undermine their patent threats, replaces references to the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act with more specific language, and clarifies that using BitTorrent to convey a GPLed work is not a breach of the license (it might be one, technically, in GPLv2). The GPL FAQ has been updated to cover the new changes."

GPLv3 is incompatible with GPLv2.

Does anyone know of a good source that compares v2 & v3 ?..and why v3 is better or even reqd.

in simple terms i think it has been designed to prevent open source companies from gettting sued by companies like microsoft.

I guess you have read Stallman's explanation about tivoization. Also read this month's LFY interview with Linus Torvalds. He says that GPLv3 is petty and selfish and is not in favor of moving the kernel to a GPLv3 licence. He is more forgiving of companies doing what they please with GPLed software as long as they don't violate the license. What Stallman is fighting against is the use of GPLed software in conjunction with DMCA. You must have heard about how the printer companies are using DMCA to target makers of compatible cartridges (nothing to do with GPL).So Stallman says, if you are using DRM, develop your own software to go along with it Don't piggyback on my work. It is a valid point. And that is not going to make users migrate from Linux to FreeBSD or whatever. Companies may move if they so wish. But that is their prerogative.Infact I am planning to move to Linux sometime soon. I love Ubuntu.

I think the Novell-Microsoft deal has made Richard Stallman and the Open Source community paranoid. I think it was the main reason the need for a GPLv3 was felt. But recent developments have changed the way the community is looking at the deal, and maybe it can actually be quite beneficial to them.
