I've been a user of Hathway - Hyderabad for more than a year with 64kbps, few hundred MBs and round-the-clock connectivity. I recently migrated to their Liteway I (256kbps, 1GB & 24/7) and am so far satisfied with the speeds.
But what gets me is that they give you a static IP which is hidden from the outside world (i.e. 'ping a.b.c.d' gives a time out error) and TCP connections are blocked. With this, running any kind of P2P application is out of my reach. I realized this while trying to set up an audio stream that I could share with my pals over the Net, now that I had a 'broadband' connection.
I took up with Hathway and their reply was that lesser mortals like home users aren't privileged enough to avail such facilities. I have to either go for their
business user packages (Rs.0.6 to 5.0 lakhs per annum) or cough up Rs.15K as security deposit to have specific TCP ports opened. This was communicated with a 'take-it-or-leave-it' finality.
I'm wondering (as I did, in my mail to Hathway): Of what use is the static ip and broadband speed? All I can do now is browse, chat and exchange emails - for which I don't need a broadband connectivity.
How are the other ISPs faring? I was at least able to ping a user of
Beam Cable, a local provider in Hyderabad. But some reviews I found
here and
here aren't very enouraging to make the switch. Also, the contact #'s were constantly busy.............well!!!
