Near-HD experience on Recorder

You can now watch HD channels using your Recorder
HD channels will have far superior picture quality on your LCD/Plasma/LED TVs as compared to the regular SD channels
Output is very close to the HD experience although it will still be in SD format
HDMI output of Recorder should be used for best picture quality of HD channels
You will get the full 16:9 widescreen experience on your widescreen TV

Near-HD experience on Recorder - FAQs

Is the HD package on a topup? What can I watch?

Yes, the HD package is a topup
Currently advertisement-free Football Worldcup is available at Rs. 90 + taxes till 12th July
Some Wimbledon matches will also be broadcast for free on this topup
In the future, we will continue to add new channels to the HD lineup

How do I add the topup?

SMS ADD ESPNHD to 54325 from your RTN or SMS ADD ESPNHD from any other mobile
Call 12150 from your Airtel mobile phone or 020 4444 8080 (West), 033 4444 8080 (East), 080 4444 8080
(South), 0124 444 8080(North) from any other phones to add the topup

Do I need an HDMI out for watching the HD channels?

No, you can also see the HD channels using the AV/Component/RF outputs but some TVs have aspect ratio
issues and it is not the best experience. Picture quality will not be as good as on an HDMI output.

Can I watch HD channels on my regular SD box i.e. non-recorder?

No, HD channels cannot be watched on the regular SD box (non-recorder)

Hi,

When I spoke to Airtel people yesterday (not the Call centre), they said the current Airtel DVR cannot work with HD Channels at all (even though it had HDMI port)

Also the HD set top box they are giving now does not have recording facility.

When I asked what I should do to get both recording and HD, they said an announcement for HD+Recording will be done in a few days. I only hope they wont ask me to shell out another 6000 for this box.

Are you saying that Ican go for HD top up now if I have the Airtel DVR and HDMI Cable?

will it work on conventional CRT TV or it requires LED or LCD tv??/

It will be in 16:9 format and will work but will have scaling issues(distorted picture if you don't have a flat panel)

Also it will not be HD but will be able to decode the HD transmission and retransmit in SD.... I think Tata Sky + can do the same but TS is not even offering this to their Customers

"Output is very close to the HD experience although it will still be in SD format"

Real googly!

I think what they mean is that though it will be 576i it will be have better PQ than their standard channels as these channels will be with lesser compression :)

Confirmed with AIRTEL people finally that the present DVR WILL NOT be able to server HD content. So if you want HD + Recording facility, you will have to wait for sometime. The present HD set top box cannot record programsFor existing DVR subscribers, I hope the upgrade to HD+Recorder will not be too painful. I hope they wont ask me to shell out another 6000 (over the 6000 I already paid for the DVR)Waiting...

Ok. Allow me to negate my earlier statement.HD can be enabled on the DVR box. I had to call the Bangalore Nodal office to call that.Got ESPN HD enabled. Right now, Im getting a message on ESPN HD that the WC SF match will start at 11:50PM.

i thought it was already made clear that Airtel DVR is capable of delivering near HD quality service :D
