That article seems to be a poor defence for the inadequacy of hybrids. And the end of the day it's economics that will decide an individual's decision to buy a hybrid over a regular petrol or diesel car. Yes, a few people will do it out of environmental responsibility, but very few.Since hybrids aren't mass produced to the extent of their petrol counterparts, they are more expensive. So therefore, the only way that it becomes beneficial to the average Joe on the street is if the kmpl is very good. And from that sense, yes it would be very attractive to get a Civic that gives 20kmpl as opposed to the 9 or 10 you get out of the petrol version. But this would be only if other things remain constant. If servicing / maintenance costs are substantially higher, or pickup is less, then many people wouldn't go for the hybrid version.

actually hybrids are of different types... in the case of Civic it is very simple just a series hybrid and unlike toyota prius, the gasoline engine has a bigger role to play than the electric motor in Honda Civic hybrid so service, maintanence is not a big concern. its still the same engine that needs to be taken care of. also the negative points of the engine are lessened due to the hybrid config so it means less maintanence. dont think that i'm arguing infavour of civic. actually I favour the Prius and the plugin-hybrid models that are going to come from both honda and toyota. hybrid vehicles are really confusing and more dry and is difficult to market because there are lot of intangible benefits which can be only felt. I studied some stuff about hybrids in two of my subjects - IC engines and automobile engineering. technically it is obviously superior to normal vehicles and economically also it will be sound as adoption increases. I guess the new tata 1 lakh car is also technically a hybrid. not uses electric motor but a compressed air powered engine. this is not confirmed news. and yes as u said, the auto industry/market is a massive establishment. it is very difficult to change things. a good example is the GM's full electric car that was recalled even though it was damn superior to the conventional vehicles. I forgot the model name. anyway time to hit the sack. will update tomm :D

tata's so called air car project is a different one from the rs. 1 lakh car. the 1 lakh rupee car is using a regular gasoline engine from what i know.

as for the officially available info, yes the 1 lakh car is like any other car powered by a regular gasoline engine. but there are lot of speculations as TATA might be bringing the air powered car also during the same time around 2008. I was just referring to those (Indian air-powered City Cat car prepares for production run - Engadget), even this was talked in a cover story in business today I forgot which month. but its clear from the following articles that it is indeed two different models.
Air Car - First Air-Powered Car - Zero Emissions - Behind the Tech - Popular Mechanics
Cars fired by compressed air - Tatas Rs 1-lakh car - Technology Automobile News

as some people would say. its the beginning of a revolution. :Pmahindra scorpio is also scheduled to get a hybrid version i think...

Hope Gov. do some Tax concessions in near future. Honda had earlier clarified due to high import duties :wall:
