I had a laptop a few years back. When I decided to connect it to BSNL internet for the first time, a BSNL employee came to configure the internet settings on the laptop. Now a few days back I bought a laptop and I thought that I had to again call the BSNL employee for configuring the settings on the new laptop. However when I tried it myself, I found that there was no configuring required. I simply put the modem cable into the port and clicked on the internet icon and typed in the username and password and the internet was connected. I want to know how did the modem automatically configure the settings or was it the laptop which recognized the modem?

Newer windows OSes like Windows 7 and 8 don't need any manual configurations required if the modem is in always on mode(no dial-up). I think that has been the case since Windows XP ? :secret:

He said he has to enter username and password so it's not automated connection.

thanks for your answers....yeah the previous laptop had windows xp and this one is having windows 7....that could be one reason....the other reason can very well be right also that it is the modem that is configured...thanks
