lol.. i downloaded 5 full movies and lots of movies + nfs underground ( :P ) from comps that were not firewalled.. just didn't mention it here fearing a tongue lashing  and i think sify is a MAN  .. and you can play games across any network as also with sify

It's not a MAN. It's a LAN under one Subscriber unit. So all the customers within your CTO's network are like on a local LAN. While this is an advantage to do things like "play network games" it is a disadvantage as far as security is concerened. One PC on the LAN infected with a virus or worm can slow down the whole CTO segment by choking bandwidth. Which I think is the reason why Sify gives that free anti-virus. Else an ISP will not care if your PC is infected with any virus :). In their standard installation, te CTO is also supposed to run a gateway antivirus to contrain the viruses if any to only his Segment/Network. BTW, this feature/problem is unique to only the Sify implementation as of today. This does not apply to a DSL Broadband Network.

i dont think the networked comps hav the same CTO , but all of the having the same gateway are networked(I THINK, not sure) , that will be one part of the city or the whole city can any bangaloreans tell me their gateway(TO CHECK)

maybe he wanted to ask, how does it manage to work with such glaring flaws and crappy operators. ;)

surjeett! Good thing you restarted this thread. I'd forgotten all about it. Since you are a Sify franchisee yourself you'd know about it :) I wanted to know what's the physical structure of a Sify connection from the sunscriber's home to the franchisee like? We all know that it's a LAN and has a gateway. So where does the Subscriber Unit come into the picture? Is it so that one Subscriber Unit can serve more than one LAN ?One employee of my Sify franchisee told me that there's a network hub on some pole right outside the apartment I live in. That hub I think must connect me and the other computers on the same LAN as me to the gateway. What do you think?

hehe ur CTO uses HUbs, lol mine uses switches frm SMC and whoa the speeds r gr8 on Lan, actually i didnt think that someone wuld invest that much in gettin switches rather than hubs, but to my supriese he uses a 100mb/s one.and as to ur question yes Hubs r used to connect computers togeather where there is need to connect more than 2 comps.
