I had renewed my passport in 7 years as the details was handwritten by officials and it had evaporated.

Didn't get you. Probably not possible in my case right ?
I guess you mean the issue date and expiry date was hand written ?

I guess it would qualify under damaged/lost scenario. I dont think that applies in the normal case. For US, you need to have one year more before expiration before you get visa. And yes, you can renew at Indian embassy in US, but I guess you need to get a fresh visa stamping on the new passport once you exit US. Better read more on that.

I read and it says that after renewal they send back the old passport and the visa on old passport remains valid till it is expired.

Also the duration of passport issued by embassies is of shorter duration if I am not wrong.

True, if you continue to stay there. But what if you step out of US, back to India, say for vacation. Even I am not sure, but just double check for info if needed

I guess not needed

Q.8 My passport has expired, but the U.S. visa in it is still valid. Do I need to apply for a new visa?
No. If your visa is valid and unmarked or undamaged, you can travel with your two passports together (old and new), if the purpose of your travel matches your current nonimmigrant visa. Also, the name and other personal data must be the same in both passports (unless the name change was due to marriage), and both passports must be from the same country and of the same type (i.e., both tourist passports and both diplomatic passports).

If your name changed due to marriage, you can travel to the United States with both passports as well as your marriage certificate.

The whole details in the laminated pages in front and back was handwritten. Even if your passport photo differs vastly with your current appearance, you can renew it.

But it is not applicable in normal cases

Seriously ???
If this is possible how can I get it done. I can really consider this. My passport was issued in 2005 and with my receding hairline I am sure my appearance is different now. :P

Well does reissue mean I will get same as current expiry date ? Because of that is the case then it defeats the purpose.

I had a similar case, I was lucky, I managed it somehow during US visits since the details were bit legible. I got it renewed 2 years back and now a days everything is printed hence no issues
