Well does reissue mean I will get same as current expiry date ? Because of that is the case then it defeats the purpose.

No idea about that :iomg:

reissue and renew, try to understand the difference. reissued passport will have same expiry date as old one.

Reissue happens when there in a passport lost/burnt/damaged.

Renew you know.

I had got my passport with expiry of only 5 years (as I took in Tatkal). And when it was about to renew, I was in UK. I got it renewed for another 5 years in Indian embassy. They didnt issue new passport, just added new expiry date by handwriting on inside page (and referred to that page number on first page). Later when ever I passed through immigration counter at Airport, person there said that may passport has expired, and I had to point to renewal page :)

^^This is new and amazing as compared to what is read on their website. A mere handwritten updation of expiry date?

handwritten is fine if its covered with official seal I guess, not sure though.

That passport lady was apparently wrong. Renewals can only be applied for within 1 year of expiry. But yes at least in case of USA and other countries Where there is Indian embassy one can get it renewed then and there.

Yes. There was official seal/stamping and sign of officer below renewal date. But date was handwritten.
