:D. suddenly i am thinking of 2K as loss..
1000- from lady(which he has to return now to the next shopkeeper)
200- for procuct
800-(1000-200)---
so altogether 1000+200+800
am i adding some thing :(

Sorry to say you are indeed wrong, lets approach it in a yet another way. Lets see only the shopkeeper perspective, to keep things simple
Pre-Sale:
He has Rs.200 worth of goods he owns. So zero loss, zero gain.
Sale:
He no longer has Rs.200 of goods, but has Rs.200 cash. So zero loss, zero gain.
Post-Sale:
He has to give Rs.1000 cash to friend. So 1000 loss.
Whatever numbers or transactions that happened beyond what I wrote above, are of no monetary significance to him
I think its that time in the movie. Now whoever says its not 1000, needs to tell me whats wrong in my above post.

where is the balance he gave to the women??? 800 rupees?u r missing that?
Lady actually makes 1000 ruppees profit rite(800+200 goods). That amount is looss for him. and he need to pay his friend 1000 ruppees.:S

he gets 1000 rupees from his friend.
he gives 800 rupees to the lady. keeps the 200.
he gives back 1000 rupees to his friend.
his loss? 800 rupees.
lady also takes 200 rupees worth of stuff.
total loss 1000 rupees.

Hold on... Whatever happens beyond what I wrote above, is of insignificant monetary value.
Lady makes 1000 profit (you yourself agree)
Other shopkeeper makes 0 profit 0 loss (you yourself agree)
Shopkeeper makes ?
Find ?
This is basic math, my friend.

exactly.
as already mentioned before...
things have to be balanced. money cannot disappear just like that.
lady makes 1000.
his friend makes 0.
shopkeeper loss? 1000.

Haha we should have more thread like this :P ... In a couple of hours we have had 9 pages of so worth of replies :D ...Reminds me of the early days of the Hayai thread :D ... Anyway now that I have looked through the thread there are a few answers with compelling arguments that I found... This problem is more about the play of word rather than the "math"... Its mostly when you get past the play of words is when u can really do the math... Anyway as much as it bums me out so say this I think I might have been wrong in my calculation... Out of all the arguments the Rs 1000 loss argument seems most logical... God knows what happened to me... I used to be so good at trick questions :( ...
