Yep. I bought mine in september last yr for 3200 bucks. And that was for a Sony which is costlier than the rest. A b-grade moserbaer (edgetec) 10 DVD+R spindle costs 150 bucks now.

what I do is:I have a set of 5 cdrw's and 5 dvdrw's.i use them for experiments.if i like data after experiments then i copy it to cdr or dvdr,,,,,, and free my cdrw's or dvdrw's

So, I have zero info about dvd...please answer these questions...

1. What is the storage life for a dvd-r ? (for a Sony 700 mb cd its 3-5 yrs)
2. Should I buy external usb dvd writer or buy one that replaces the cd burner? If I replace the cd burner...then I cant read/write cd's anymore? Or I have to go for a combo solution?
3. Also which brand and model shoud I go for ?
4. I dont want to burn a dual layer dvd...single layer is fine..., and Sushubh said, an empty dvd-r costs just 20 bucks?? Which brand is the best brand for dvd-r?? - is it sony ???
5. Which is better? dvd-r or dvd+r

1. Depends how well it is stored, assuming very low humidty prolly bout the same.
2. What do you use your cd-writer for ? just writings cds, or ripping games + music as well, recommended writers will depend on your answer.
3. see 2.
4. see 2.
5. see 2

> What do you use your cd-writer for ? just writings cds, or ripping > games + music as well, recommended writers will depend on your > answer.Hey blr_p, I use the cd writer for burning music + movies onto cd's. I dont rip cd's, I just download data and burn all this as a data cd. I do not own a music system or a dvd player or a tv, and I will never get any of these. And I do not play games at all. So based on this, let me know what is good!:)

I should also add that I am not concerned about speed of burning or any fancy features. Most important is that the burnt dvd's are reliable and last for those 3-5 years under proper care...

Then get a BenQ-1640 or 1650. Will give you the best quality DVD writes out there. i picked up a 1650 for Rs.2700 you might find for cheaper. It's CD-writing is pretty good too.

The main reason is that BenQ has a learning algorithm that learns about the media you throw at it so it gets better after a few writes. Best DVD media to use with it is Moser-baer+R. You could go for b-grade moserbaer usually has funky names, but try to use +R media. -R works well too but may be more problematic.

You can also check the quality of the burns since the benQ has firmware that reports how many errors it encounters during a read. This was the major reason for me to go with the BenQ as you can get little more info about the quality of the write than what most other writers offer you. The theory is fewer the times the drive has to resort to error-correction while reading, the better the write and consequently longer, the dvd will be readable. Of course life expectancy is highly dependnat on the dyes used by the manufacturer of said media, but i hear Moser-Baer is not bad.

I have posted some scans from various media here

Either get the benQ now or wait a yr. BenQ's optical storage division will belong to Lite-On from July onwards this yr and there are big expectations of an even better writer from them in the future. But that's just speculation. sometimes mergers can work in the opposite direction as two different sets of employees need to be married together and all the inherent problems that come with it. IN any case it will take time for the dust to settle and you could end up waiting longer.

Ok, thanks for the detailed reply! I'll wait till the next model comes out. Actually, I may not even have to get it forever...because I have almost decided on downloading no more than the next 50 GB or so. I want to break free of attachment to the internet, so its because of that too.
