bad sectors :S

I ran the seagate online diagnostic testing tool ....and it says bad sectors (see below) . Now what do I do...return it to seagate? and fill the online form before that? This is such a waste of time...:(SeaTools Online Complete Surface ScanStarted at 9:20:59 AM on 4/17/2006.Scanning drive: Intel PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller : ST96812A USB DeviceSerial Number: Capacity: 60.01 GB - An error was encountered reading sector 2898. - An error was encountered reading sector 2900. - An error was encountered reading sector 2901. - An error was encountered reading sector 2902. - An error was encountered reading sector 2903. - An error was encountered reading sector 2904. - An error was encountered reading sector 2905. - An error was encountered reading sector 2906. - An error was encountered reading sector 2907. - An error was encountered reading sector 2908. - An error was encountered reading sector 2909. - An error was encountered reading sector 2910. - An error was encountered reading sector 2911. - An error was encountered reading sector 2912. - An error was encountered reading sector 2913. - An error was encountered reading sector 2914.Errors were found during the scan.SeaTools has stopped scanning drive ST96812A USB Device because at least 16 sectors on the drive are unreadable. As a precaution against data loss, it is strongly suggested that you back up any important data on the drive as soon as possible.

I see...that's too bad Sushubh...moral of the story - always backup data on good old cd's and take care to copy those cd's every 3-5 years. This is the exact reason I did not go to buy a ready made usb hard drive because the warranty for that is only 1 year.

Strange....it formatted on someone else's laptop running Win XP. And the seagate diagnostic tool was giving errors as posted earlier. And now it is working ok! It copies 1.5 GB of data in about a minute ;)This is how technology works? hahaha. Thanks for all the replies on this topic! But I strongly advise everyone to backup data anyway.:)

Heh, i buy twice the storage that i currently use, and with a controller card backup to another redundant HD.

I stopped using cds for backup years ago..takes too friggin' long to restore in the event of a failure.

This way you already have the stuff backed up to another HD. Wait for the warrantied drive to arrive and sync to it from backup.

Do post back on how long Seagate takes to get you a replacement drive.

Yea, i thought so. The bad sectors must've been caused by the failed format sessions. Usually go away mysteriously after its been properly formatted. And 1.5GB/min ain't bad at all. There are some known issues with usb 2.0 external drives even with WinXP with ppl getting delayed write errors and what not. And nobody has been able to pinpoint the exact cause yet. Hit and trial is the only alternative :)

I use up atleast 5 DVD's every month or so to back up movies and mp3's :P
