India Blocks: Mass blocking of web services by Indian Government

I use tor browser, but the speed is reduced. Earlier I wud use hot spot shield, it was also good. Which is a free good VPN if u happen to know?

Can access on mtnl and rcom wireless.

Changing DNS doesn't work.

Might be way of implementation is different among ISPs. I'm on airtel but on gateway separate from their adsl customer as my local ISP buys bulk bandwidth has a separate IP block. Just checked again and here most of the sites are opening just fine even with google dns and others today.

Either ISPs are intercepting ALL DNS requests on port 53 and then redirecting them to their own DNS servers or they aren't at all.Interception for some DNS servers and not for others dont make sense.Anyway they arent using DNS blocks but DeepPacketInspection and blocking on the basis of hostname in the packets.

Right, doesn't look like DNS block because sites are working fine now even with google and opendns here. Anyway already have arrangements to deal with all this shit which keeps happening from time to time.

I think there are different blocks implemented. When I go to some sites I get this "This website/URL has been blocked until further notice either pursuant to Court orders or on the Directions issued by the Department of Telecommunications" while on a few other sites I get this "HTTP Error 404 - File or Directory not found".
