Is it dangerous installing "The Flac Decoder for Windows" on your Desktop or Computer

Dear Friends, Greetings. I would be grateful for some "Sound Advice" with regard to this matter as soon as possible. I have been sent some Flac Files by two friends from the United States and Canada. Now, I would like to convert them to the MP3 Format. Is it dangerous installing "The Flac Decoder for Windows" PLEASE HELP !!Regards,

umm... i think klite codec pack should work fine for playing the flac files. i suggest you use media-convert.com to convert the files to mp3...

instead of going thru all those steps in the link above, wouldnt it be simpler to just install audacity and try converting from there maybe? i havent used audacity myself, just thinking aloud...

Audacity is slow - importing the flac file, locating the lame_enc dll and then exporting the file as mp3. Is possible but is slow. The first solution is simpler.Another option is using a software like dbpoweramp. The basic version does not have mp3 encoding capabilities though. Have to use the paid/ trial version for that.--------------------------If lossy audio compression is all that is required, mp3 can be discarded in favour of ogg vorbis. flac and ogg both being open source, dbpoweramp will work wonderfully. And all media players support it. Of course I am assuming that the pc is being used for listening to music, and not ipods, dvd players etc.

I'd prefer cmd line tools here.

converts flac to wav
flac -d

or to do all the files in the directory
flac -d *.flac

creates mp3 from wav
lame -V2 --vbr-new your_flac.wav your_flac.mp3

Done

Upload a flac file to get an mp3 back? Will take ages on a slow connection. Can't even imagine doing such a thing on dialup/ gprs.

Many Thanks for all of your inputs. The Worst part is that i have to download a Flac File of 266 MB with a download speed of 25.0 KBS/Sec or a bit more.

Some of you all may know about the problems, i have been having with my MTNL PLAN DSL - 2399. It will take probably 2 Hours or more just to download that Flac File at that speed as things are "Rock Bottom" for me as they stand now between me and my MTNL Connection.

Therefore, I would prefer to go for Sushubh's First Suggestion and use Media-Convert.com once i have downloaded the flac file in order to convert it to MP3 Format.

I plan to terminate this MTNL Plan soon, as it has given me nothing but headaches and people talk about tata and their nonsense.

I wish someone would take up my cause, as i have been overcharged thrice and i have been experiencing massive downtime for almost 5 Months now.

umm hmm. u need to upload a file to convert it. your best solution would be to use a software based solution.
