airtel doesn't have the spectrum depth of its rivals in mumbai or maharashtra & goa. vi leads the raw quantum in both (122.8 mhz in mh & goa), and airtel historically under-invested here, even declining to buy any spectrum in mumbai in the 2021 auction. yet my real-world call and data experience on airtel has consistently beaten jio. that gap is the whole point really. spectrum is an input, not the outcome.
for me it comes down to the voice layer. airtel's volte and vowifi implementation is just more polished i feel personally. cleaner call setup, reliable handovers, and a vowifi fallback that actually holds calls together in weak indoor spots instead of dropping them. stable calls are about how well an operator anchors and hands over voice, not who owns the most megahertz.
jio is the opposite story for me. in the right spot it'll throw out 1 gbps on its 700 mhz + 3500 mhz + 26 ghz mix, but peak speed isn't overall quality, and everyday experience especially calls has been poor. a big part is congestion. jio carries the country's largest subscriber base by far, so even with a strong portfolio the spectrum-per-active-user is stretched thin. that choking under load shows up as inconsistent calls and variable throughput, even while the speed-test number looks spectacular.
