JioFiber Bufferbloat: 2024 vs 2026 but the lag spike is EXACTLY the same

Also the ping for me on Waveform Bufferbloat test is around 5-6ms constant. Yours seems to be much higher. Should be closer to 20-25 on air fiber.
 
@ipriyank totally understand your anger with Wi-Fi Connectivity with AirFiber but the issue you're facing is only caused by congestion between your Device to Router.
If this can occur on Jio Router, it is possible that it can occur on Airtel Router too even if it's Fiber connected.
Before changing to any ISP, make sure that your Wi-Fi Drivers and everything works perfectly so that when you change ISP, this problem should not occur on that router too otherwise it'll be loss of money.

BufferBloat result of Airtel fiber- Bufferbloat and Internet Speed Test - Waveform


I work remotely from Howrah on Azure Virtual Desktop with the server in UK South data center. Latency and jitter are critical — every ms of spike = visible lag on screen.

Just switched from Jio AirFiber ( still did not disconnect) to Airtel Fiber 100Mbps today. Results are much better but the speed in my work room fluctualtes. and signal too. This was not the case with JIO Airfiber ROuter.

My test results (WiFi 5, 5GHz, 70% signal):

Ping to Google: avg 38ms, max 83ms, 0% loss
Ping to Azure UK: avg 55ms, max 66ms, 0% loss
Bufferbloat download: max 41ms (excellent)
Bufferbloat upload: max 173ms (some spikes)
Airtel default DNS: 967ms
Cloudflare DNS: 55ms
Router gateway ping: avg 8ms, spikes to 42ms on WiFi
Previous Jio AirFiber numbers for comparison:

Azure ping: avg 68ms, max 262ms
Upload bufferbloat: 1,281ms
DNS: 3,432ms

My questions:

DNS — Can I change DNS to 1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1 on the Airtel router (192.168.1.1)?

UPnP — Should I enable UPnP for UDP-based RDP Shortpath? Where is this in the Airtel router admin panel?

WiFi channel — I'm on channel 48 (5GHz, 802.11ac). Is this a DFS channel? Should I change to 36/40/44 for more stability? My signal is only 70%.

Upload bufferbloat — Getting 173ms spike during upload. Is there any QoS or SQM setting on the Airtel router to fix this?

Router model — It's the default Airtel Fiber WiFi 5 router. Is there a way to check exact model from the admin panel? Would replacing with a better router (like TP-Link Archer AX73) help with WiFi range and bufferbloat?



Router is in the hall, I work from a different room. Can't move the router. Appreciate any tips
 
I tested connecting to the Jio AirFiber router via LAN and still experienced latency. On the other hand, the Airtel Fiber router is only Wi-Fi 5 and its signal isn't as strong as Jio's. I managed to split the combined SSIDs, but the 5GHz signal from the hall to my workroom is quite weak. I never had this coverage issue with Jio AirFiber. Since moving the router to the passage seems to be my only choice for Airtel, would that actually fix the signal drop?
 
@ipriyank get an actual fiber router in the room you work from, not airfiber. the speed and latency on those are rough. isp routers in general aren't great for speed, latency, or coverage for that matter.

honestly even my ubiquiti u6+ (wifi 6) access points struggle to penetrate thick walls, signal and latency both take a hit the further you go. moving the router closer beats fighting the signal drop.

I just switched to Airtel Fiber, but it looks like I'll have to move the router out into the passage. While the 5GHz band gives great speeds, the 2.4GHz band is completely terrible, only giving me about 30 Mbps on a 100 Mbps plan. Should I buy a third-party router and put the ISP gateway into bridge mode?

That said, if your work isn't highly dependent on latency and upload bufferbloat isn't a dealbreaker, the default Jio AirFiber routers are actually pretty good and offer great range and speed.
 
@ipriyank 2.4GHz band is always terrible on most ISP provided routers. Just move router in the same room as you work from for your usecase. Thats most cost effective solution. Otherwise invest in wired APs.

And no - despite how well it works I will never get airfiber from any company cause latency, ping and speeds will be still bad compared to wired fiber!! There are 10-15 ISPs in my area which all fight for best value plans and services. I have no reason or incentive to switch to inferior solution.
 
I am not seeing bufferbloat since today. As always, not sure if it will remain good, but good to see.

Edit: Even though ping remains quite stable, there is packet loss when the bandwidth goes over 300 Mbps.
