Sony is the most idiotic brand. They sold the rights to this movie for $20 mn to Netflix, and now Netflix is sitting on a gold mine. Even if Sony strikes a deal for the sequel, they get to keep only 20% of the profits. Sony didn't trust itself. They should have given this a full theatrical release. Also, there is a huge missed merch opportunity. Netflix doesn't have a department for merch and 2 month into it, they still haven't done anything with it.
The point is that the movie is amazing. It is not just for youngsters. It can appeal to everyone. And yet Sony is like, nope. We can't make money on our own. The VFX company behind this is the same one that did Spider-Verse.
