Ok so it appears that my laptops display is dying.

How do I know?
Well screen randomly goes complete dark.

But if I look closely I can see the text and images (very faintly)

Pointing a flashlight makes it little more visible. (but still too dark to read)

How am I fixing it right now?

Currently if I close lid and re-open the lid - light comes back.

In Linux you can write a command to turn screen off and on again.

So I wrote that command and mapped it to a shortcut key. Like Fn+F3

So whenever screen goes dark/dim. I press Fn+F3 and its back up.

But sometimes it goes DIM in just 1 second, sometimes in 1 min and sometimes it stays up for hours.

So I do not know where the fault is?

Searching internet says its either backlight (bulb that throws light) or invertor.

So my question?

So my question is what to do?

Can backlight be replaced?
Can invertor be replaced?

Can I do it myself??

How much will be cost?

Please guide / suggest.

You cannot do it yourself. Also I don't think anyone who repairs laptops/displays changes the backlight to fix the LCD. They usually change the whole panel. Cost would be somewhere around 5k.

OK so finally laptop display is almost dead.

Backlight turns on and switches off in 10-30 seconds.

I had extra LED monitor so temporarily I have attached it to laptop and working.

But anyone else has idea - if only backlight bulb can be replaced and money be saved?

Which brand was laptop, and what was age, I mean since when (Year) were you using it?

Its HP 4510s

Bought around Dec 2009. So 5 years and 7 months old.

Using 12hrs a day non-stop mostly.

Why did you ask? Can some brands be repaired easily?

I hope bulb can be replaced. Because bulb will not cost much say 500-600Rs? And service charge 500-600Rs?

So I shud be able to repair it in max 1500Rs! :D

Just asked. Never heard of such issue, so was curious to know about it. My Dell Laptop is also bought around same time, but usage is very low, 2 hours in a week :D
