Just wanted to have everyone's view on this. So let me start with it.

Both Airtel & Vodafone

Initial Amount : 13-16k
Packages Ranging : 1000-3000 per month.

What do you say ?

Alright... :evil:Rs.19,999 for the phone and Rs.999/month.

Here's my guess: Rs. 30,000 plus for the iPhone 3G 8GB and no contract (wouldn't work in India) but it will only be available to post-paid customers.

My logic as to price
If it's available in the U.S. for $599 (about Rs. 26,000) unlocked-ish for the 8GB version, they couldn't possibly charge less in India. 30k seems about right.

My logic as to no-contracts
In the States, everything is linked to your credit history. Here, thankfully, we don't have this evil evil system yet in the mainstream. Because what it means is that if you get an iPhone in a contract and don't honour it (e.g. by stop paying your bills) Apple will screw your credit rating. And this in turn will make your life hell when it comes time to do anything from buying a car, to taking an education loan, to buying / renting a house etc. And since all this is linked to your Social Security number, chances of scamming the system are very very low. I am not saying that it doesn't happen, but it will happen in very rare cases.

In India, people will get the phone under a false name and address (or under someone else's name and address and let them suffer) and then bounce. Anyone who has got a cell-phone connection knows how easy it is to get a connection.

So let's say the iPhone comes here for a subsidized price of 15K. People will buy it fraudulently like I said, unlock it (it's child's play to unlock it), and then sell it for 20 - 22K courtesy of places like Palika and Gaffar. Eaaaaasy profit for very little work.

vebk if we go by your assumptions then:
when iPhone was 399$ in US it was available here at 22-25K and now when its offical price is 199$ do you think it will still be at that price..

My mind says no.. then it means it will be somewhere around 15-20 unlocked...

more than 30k is not what Apple is going to like.. the same thing happened with some provider in Auastralia i guess.. they were asking for a huge amount...

so crux of the story i would buy an unlocked phone which works on any network, doesn't have any contracts with it...

Ya i agree to you on that fake purchasing of phones.. the same thing happened with Reliance as well... but 30k is not what customers are expecting after hearing the news of Apple iPhone @ 199$.

So what will you choose
Locked iPhone worth 30k + Rental + Calls ?
or
Unlocked iPhone 15-20k + Ur Sim (Prepaid/Postpaid) + Ur Calls (Which is almost free now)

what none of you'll are specifying is what do we get in the monthly rental?
how much data transfer do we get?

i believe the packages will be:

initial: 8 GB - $ 599 ~ Rs. 26000
16 GB - $ 699 ~ Rs. 30000

monthly plans will be same as usual

no change in monthly rental
no change in charges for gprs

same plans like:

no rental - 10p/10KB
199 - 5p/10KB
499 - 500 MB free & 5p/10KB
699 - 1 GB free & 5p/10KB
1499 - unltd

what say?

Dude, $199 is the price with contract. And as I explained before, there are dire consequences in the Western world to breaking this contract. Out here, companies don't have the same leverage (and that is beautiful). But it means that they cannot possibly afford to sell it with a subsidy and then hope that people don't thoroughly misuse it. Therefore, IMHO they will not offer it as a subsidized product in India. The unsubsidized price in the States is $599. So you are looking at the wrong figure. Look at $599. And my guess is that it would be slightly more expensive here. Hence, Rs. 30,000 or about that much.

Also the 22k -25k price was available from people who would go abroad, somehow manage to get one on contract, break it, and then sell it to the grey market dealers here. Apple was not here officially. With the 3G iPhone they will. And no company matches grey market prices.

what none of you'll are specifying is what do we get in the monthly rental?
Like I said, my guess is that it won't be plan based. It will probably work with any postpaid plan, though initially they may make you sign up for some special iPhone plan.

And let's remember that this thread is a "Let's Guess" thread. Not inside information!!! :P

few thoughts about iPhone and its data capabilites on cellular network in India:

I have been using iPhone on Airtel since Jan(iPhone 1st Gen though).
even while you are in an area which has EDGE coverege, Internet Browsing sucks. lets not talk about areas which doesn't have EDGE as with GPRS it would be as good(should I say bad?) as dialup internet access. with hopes of 3G network launch in India in near future fading away(as Counsil of ministers are supposed to look into spectrum and policy issues and current UPA govt's future is uncertain) iPhone would not make any sense with respect to data access via Cellular network.

So, what ever the data plan Airtel/Vodafone offers, it can't provide a good browsing speeds while you are on the move.

I never used EDGE/GPRS for more than a week continuously. I always subscribe for weekly plans in Airtel when I am on move.

how much time it takes to reach 500 MB/1GB limits using a EDGE/GPRS connection in iPhone? Also think about the fact that you can't connect your iPhone to laptop/desktop for browsing internet from laptop using iPhone EDGE/GPRS capability. you can't use iPhone as a modem.

Second thing is: using iPhone how much browsing you will be doing per month. you can't download any files using safari in iPhone. only thing you can do using iPhone's internet capability is: Browsing, e-mails and You Tube.

I don't think anyone would attempt to view youtube videos over EDGE/GPRS connection.

So, in the options rachit_1804 guessed, 499 - 500 MB free & 5p/10KB would be best one.

Currently Airtel offers(at least in Bangalore) a Weekly unlimited data plan for Rs.140/- per week. So per month it would cost Rs.560/- and it is unlimited.

I don't think Airtel/Vodafone would be launching new data plans for iPhone.

So, if you are thinking that with iPhone all you internet access problems on the go are solved, please think again. using iPhone 3G in India currently is equivalent to using iPhone 1'st gen in India.

But, I like the iPhone for its other features.
