The Retina display on iPhone ushered in the era of super-high-resolution displays. Its pixel density is so high, your eye can’t distinguish individual pixels. The images and words are amazingly vivid and crisp. Everything just looks so real. In fact, once you see a Retina display, you’re never satisfied with anything less. Yet it remains a feature found only on iPhone and other Apple products.

Same way the first iPhone ushered in music playback on a mobile phone

It's the simple truth. Samsung is using PenTile so it's not a RGB|RGB layout. It's a RG|BG layout. You have to reduce the pixels to one third to get the actual pixel count.
Although HTC & Sony has come up with full RGB screens but I am waiting for thorough tests to be done by AnandTech.

I retract my previous statement.
There are several phones from other manufacturers who have matched Retina display and even exceeded it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mobile_phones_with_HD_display
Nokia Lumia 920 is 332 PPI and the HTC Droid DNA/Butterfly is 440 PPI. Lumia 920 was released in November and the Droid DNA in December or 2012. I would say both qualify as besting the resolution of the 2010 iPhone 4. And these aren't PenTile.
It's ironic that iPhone isn't listed among this list of Wikipedia.

1136x640 on 4 inches is not high enough I guess. :D
HTC One has 1080p on 4.7 inches!
Also worth noting here... Google Chromebook Pixel has a resolution and PPI higher than any MacBook Pro Retina edition. And I believe Google Nexus 10 has a PPI and Resolution better than iPad Retina?

Yup.
Nexus 10 has 2560 x 1600 whilst iPad 4 has 2048 x 1536.
By doing math Nexus 10 PPI goes around 300 while iPad retina display PPI is 264.
