\"According to an article from last week at the Russian IT site CNews, Linux is slated to be installed in every Russian school by 2009. The article makes it appear that it will be going by the (unimaginative) name 'Russian OS.' As stated in the article: 'The main aim of the given work is to reduce dependence on foreign commercial software and provide education institutions with the possibility to choose whether to pay for commercial items or to use the software, provided by the government.' Initial testing installations are supposed to begin next year in select districts. Is 2008/09 the year of Linux on the (Russian) desktop?\"

Looks like Microsoft is going to face major problems. Linux is spreading like wild fire, and sale of only 244 copies of Vista in the most populated country of the world, with over 125 crore people, and more than 4 million PCs was a big defeat.

Another article on Slashdot says that by 2011, at least 80% of commercial software will contain significant amounts of open source code. Bill Gates now has something more to worry about :D .

and u do really believe that microsoft has only sold that many copies of vista in the entire russian market? i am sure there is a corporate market in russia which has deals with microsoft which gets them to upgrade to vista.

Maybe it is time companies like Intel, IBM, Sun, Toshiba, MercedesDaimler-Chrysler etc start open sourcing their hardware and drop all patent claims so that anybody can manufacture the hardware and sell at cheap rates.

AK is talking about the 244-or-so copies sold in China. I think China Telecom or some Chinese PSU was also running a public license activation server.

Yeah, I referred to China. Population ke maamle mein to Hindi-Cheeni bhai-bhai :P. @gregory houseI really don't like people shortening my name. My name is the only thing that belongs to me and I am proud of, too. Please use Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V if you want to save yourself from the typing :). {No offence meant}

I am finicky about a few things myself and have tried telling people that so many times. Then I realised that there is no point doing it coz I will have to wear a board around my neck saying I like these things and I don't like these. So, after a point, I let them do what they want and I do what I want.It is similar to satyagraha. It is the hope that someday they will realise their mistake and correct themselves while I maintain my position.Don't you think that is some thing to think about, Apoorv Khatreja (I typed the whole thing, and no offense taken)?

@gregory house

Too much philosophy for me, perhaps. Didn't understand what you were aiming at.

I think I agree with you. Probably it doesn't matter.

@Sushubh
?!?! What was that for?

akismetwas testing a feature which converts shortcuts to long form. so i am tying AK here but it would not show as A K.would it break anything else. i doubt so... :|

A nice feature. When I type a followed by k, it becomes Apoorv Khatreja automagically. Some find and replace algorithm at work.

@Apoorv Khatreja
What I was saying was, I accept your point and will follow it when I communicate with you. But there are so many people in this world with so many different points of view and ways of reasoning that, after a point, it becomes very tiring to even try to control their behaviour.

--------------
Unless some one uses the short form for Alaska (thank you Word Web), it should not break anything.
