OK, just came back from the Maruti showroom. the car definitely looks much better than it does in pictures. its mostly a please none offend none design. the interior is a mix of grey and beige. makes it airy. the stereo was surprisingly good in the Z variant. the V variant has a stripped down version which wasn't that good(maybe less speakers or something). seating is surprisingly spacious specially in the middle row which also slides back, reclines back and has a 60:40 split folding option. the 3rd row is kids only but since we have only 4 people in the family, mostly its a massive boot.Coming to the drive, I was disappointed in the diesel engine (with 6 people inside and AC cranked to full), maybe because it was the first time I was driving a diesel car. below 2k RPM, there was a noticeable lag between pressing the throttle and getting some response. the petrol was much better. peppy to drive and dead silent. not the most powerful around but decent power. the suspension was very plush which is surprising for a Maruti but I guess that would lead to some body roll(I drove only for 2km or so in city traffic so didn't get to test it). definitely not an enthusiasts car. there's no black color available which was strange. I think it'd look good in black.because of the unimpressive diesel engine and the fact that his running is low, Dad booked a white ZXi. total cost is 8.15 lacs on road. Delivery time is 2 weeks. booking amount was 20k. the response seemed pretty good. I was there for about an hour and in that time, around 20-25 people must've come to check the car. he will now check out the rapid/vento and then decide I guess.

the diesel engine from fiat kicks turbo at around 2.5K RPM from what i know. until then it remains sluggish. diesels require you to play around with the lower gears in slower speeds compared to the petrol engines. once the turbo kicks in, it is sheer pleasure to drive. and yes, the same engine in my linea is very sluggish on congested roads because of the reasons you described. but once you have good empty roads, this engine works fine even under heavy load :P

I think it takes a while getting used to a diesel vehicle. Once you get the hang of it, even in city conditions you won't have any complaints. I wonder how a 1.4l petrol engine will perform with ac on and 6-7 people sitting.

^^ according to reviews, both perform just fine. No scorchers either, but get the job done.and yeah , turbo lag just kills the fun.Though might add that newer diesel engines like the one in the Verna are MUCH better but even then , are no comparison to the Petrols.

People used to a turbo diesel get so addicted to it that petrol does not give the same kick. If you are not averse to switching down gears, you really enjoy the zip of a diesel engine.

actually, i do not enjoy driving petrol cars anymore. i like the feel of the diesel engine. and i got myself a diesel car knowing that it would cost me a whole lot more in the long run as well considering i do not drive much.
