its a 419 type scam. they say you have won a lottery or some product or something like that.

they ask you to give them your personal details. might ask for some payments too.

some people might fall for it. it's a profitable business in the end?

----------

and since it is a missed call they do not really lose anything.

as is mentioned some posts above, in some countries there are special numbers where call rates are very high and the receiver gets part of that payment.

I received a call from 003444 a while back . Googled around a little, points mostly towards a scam. Gee, its ringing again. Is this a similar scam or what?

I received a missed call from some European country few weeks back , i googled i think it was hungary

I got a miss call from 92 country code. Had to search the net for more info. One of friends works in a call centre. Recently he got a similar call from pakistan saying he had won some lottery prize. The caller gave him a 92 number to call back(contact "deepak") and collect his prize. Later, upon learning that it was a pakistan number, he intentionally called back and told them that he knew it was a scam. Since, my friend had authority to make as many ISD calls as he wants from his work desk, they ended up chatting for more than 2 hours. The pakistani guy asked my friend to work for him. The scam works like this:1) The pakistani caller calls Mr. A in india and informs that he has won a cash prize2) Mr. A is told to deposit a "release cash" of X amt in an indian bank, similar to nigerian scamsters.3) The person who holds this indian bank account is an indian living in india. My friend was asked to be one of these "indian bank account holders". Lets call him Y.4) Once the cash is deposited, Y withdraws that money and uses 80% of it to buy DTH recharge coupons and keeps the rest 20% for himself. Apparently, indian DTH equipment is a hit in pakistani black market. The pakistani women are addicted to indian saas bahu serials. Recharge coupon codes are sold at premium and are hard to find.5) Y scratches all of the coupons and gives the codes to the pakistani caller.6) After a period, Y closes his bank account and opens another account elsewhere. The pakistani guy claimed that he had several people in india who worked with him.
