PraveenC,

Usually the ADSL modem also keeps a log and this can help troubleshoot. Check the "Status" or "System Log" setting in your modem. In any case your seems to be a modem issue.

It will have things like:

Code:
Jan 01 00:00:07 [IMG]http://192.168.1.1/Simage/spacer.gif[/IMG] syslog: im:Changed iplan IP address to 192.168.1.1 Jan 01 00:00:17 [IMG]http://192.168.1.1/Simage/spacer.gif[/IMG] syslog: ADSL Training Jan 01 00:00:27 [IMG]http://192.168.1.1/Simage/spacer.gif[/IMG] ppp: PPP triggered start Jan 01 00:00:27 [IMG]http://192.168.1.1/Simage/spacer.gif[/IMG] syslog: ADSL Link Up Dn/Up 2048/512Kbps (G.DMT) Jan 01 00:00:35 [IMG]http://192.168.1.1/Simage/spacer.gif[/IMG] ppp: PPP LCP reaches open state Jan 01 00:00:35 [IMG]http://192.168.1.1/Simage/spacer.gif[/IMG] ppp: PPP Start CHAP authentication
And so on. What does your modem show when you first switch on and try to connect?

Post screen shot of the Device Status page. do not blank the menu on the left.

Reg VPN : a lady at the other end told that it was indeed done by BSNL and that we had to type just &bsnl.in as the username (not username&bsnl.in) and our own password
Says VPN working Ok.
