Guys.. I have Nokia E5 and MTNL sim. I get 2G signal most of the time when I am on dual mode of network selection. The 2G signals are full.If I change to only UMTS, the 3G signals are there but 1 bar less that 2G.Is the selection of 3G or 2G done by my mobile based on the strength of the signals?

I guess so. On my mobile I have selected both GSM & 3G network mode & I normally catch 3G signal. But it changes to 2G automatically (technically 2.5G) when the 3G signal is very weak (1-2 bars out of 5).

3G drains battery. But if I dont use the data on 3G , still it will drain battery?Does all tower sites of mtnl has 3G installed or only selected few have it?

Just being on 3G network shouldn't drain your battery. If I don't use data my battery lasts for almost the same time as being on 2G. Not all towers of MTNL have 3G network.

3G signals penetrate walls less than 2G ones. Hence you always get 1 or 2 bars less. But even with less bars, you get better call quality in phone and faster data speeds than 2G.

E5 got new firmware launched for India ! its become faster now.
