HI All,I have taken an MTNL broadband connection (combo plan) and since they could not supply a wireless modem, I went ahead and bought an SMC7901WBRA-2 modem-router. Now, come what may, I am just not being able to configure it to connect to MTNL . Even the guys from MTNL have given up since they do not have too much of a clue about modems other than the ones specified by them. Does anyone on this forum use the said modem for connecting to MTNL? If yes, it will be great if you could help me out. Thanks in advance!! Cheers!!Siju

Thanks. Socrates. My bad! Let me try the settings out. The default gateway of the h/w is 192.168.2.1 and the MTNL guy told me it has to be configured to 192.168.1.1. Any idea on this?

The MTNL guy is correct, what you are referring to is accessing the router setting page. The answer is there on page 2 of the user guide whose link is given above.
'1. How can I access my SMC7901WBRA2 router?

The SMC7901WBRA2 default IP address is 192.168.2.1 and your computer will need to have an
IP address from 192.168.2.2 to 192.168.2.254.

Step 1. Set you computer IP address to one of the mentioned range (192.168.2.x with subnet
mask 255.255.255.0)
Step 2. Open the Internet Explorer Browser and enter http://192.168.2.1'

Only remember that VPI should be 0 (zero) and VCI as 32.

did all as per instructed...just not cracking it.....it is getting so incredibly frustrating!!! :madness: Please help!!!!

What errors are you getting? Are you sure that MTNL has activated your broadband a/c?

The connection is activated. Infact, I tried a basic D-Link modem with the same parameters and i was connected to my account. With the SMC, i just cant get connected. To rule out a machine failure, I took my SMC modem to a neighbour and plugged it into his phone line. Guess what, it worked like a breeze - with my credentials through his phone line!!! HOW??

That is because they have not enforced port binding yet for your connection as its a new connection, they might do it at a later date. As you say it has worked at your friends place were you connecting thru LAN wire or wireless?
Since it not working ONLY on you machine I presume there is something on your computer that is preventing the connection from happening. Check if your firewall or anti virus is blocking the connection.

thanks, socrates, for your reply. No, nothing seems wrong with my laptop. The D-Link modem that the technician got worked on the same laptop. And at my friend's place, I was on a LAN connection. Incidentally thru his laprtop tried the wireless connection as well - and it works.

Now things are getting confusing. Can you specify which type of connection is not working :)

1) Your lappy & your router thru LAN wire works ok at friends place.
2) At friends place, friends lappy & your router work ok in wifi

Is this assumption correct, if not can you please state which permutation works & does not work :)
