MTNL Broadband: Frustrated!! Need help please!!!

'Morning, Socrates. 1. My friend's PC and my modem on his phone line works thru LAN - using my credentials!!!!2. My friend's lappy works in wifi on the above setup3. A D-Link modem and my lappy works well in my place. this is getting crazier by the day!

Aah that means his lappy works thru wifi on your router but not yours , these could be the reasons which I can think off hand
1) Is your laptop using the same SSID as the router or
2) The wifi card on your lappy is not compatible with the wifi router, I know this sounds like crazy idea but I recently faced this situation recently (Socrates ). You might have to update the drivers of your wifi card on the lappy and/or update the firmware of your wifi router or
3) Are you using the WPA2 wifi security & your lappy is on Win XP then it will not work unless you install a patch to upgrade the wifi security on your XP lappy.(Socrates )

thanks, Socrates, for riding with me on this! Appreciate it. Meanwhile,1. My lappy runs Win 7 and the router has the latest firmware.2. Have not tried running my lappy on wifi with my router as the basic ethernet connectivity to the internet was not being established.3. Am using WPA 2; my lappy is on WIn7.

Hmm. If you have Vista or Win 7 then setting up wifi should be easy. If the the lappy cannot connect thru the basic ethernet connection then it has to be a problem with the LAN card in the lappy , ( I hope you have checked that its not a firewall or anti virus or even the LAN cable :redface:which is being the spoil sport) :)I presume its still under warranty BTW which make of lappy is it?

 I think you will then have to be more specific which lappy is functioning thru ethernet & which is not. But in post #13 point 2 you have said '2. Have not tried running my lappy on wifi with my router as the basic ethernet connectivity to the internet was not being established.'

Spcrates - My apologies for the long absence - was out of town. Finally, the guys from SMC distributor confirmed that there was an internet connectivity problem with the modem-router - so much for all the head banging!!! Returned it and bought a Belkin N150...configured it with the same parameters and was on the information highway in a matter of seconds. Thanks, "socrates" for the massive help extended!!! Appreciate this!!

Welcome :) Good thing you could dump the SMC unit, I hope Belkin gives better service. When my cousin bought a Wifi router in June this year the shop asst told him to avoid belkin as, even though it was well priced, it was seen as problematic. I personally would stay with either Linksys/Netgear/D-Link in that order.

Hmmm....let me see how this Belkin stacks up. Keep you posted. So far so good. the only issue (again!) is that there are two telephone points in the house - one in the living space and another in the master bedroom. While when plugged into the living room socket, i get connected, for some vague reason, it does not work when plugged to the bedrrom socket. Wonder what is wrong. Have called the MTNL technician today.
