SNR margin is NOT the difference as you said but its tolerance level.
How much decrease (difference) in SNR can be tolerated from exchange
to your modem. More the tolerance wud mean if noise is high it wud try
to re-correct the packets sent/received but that would mean speed will
decrease as same data is sent again. But then to achieve faster speeds
this tolerance should be decreased.

Noise here is not just noise created by voice but it cud be additional
disturbance caused in waves travelling through tel wire. Say by cable
TV wires, LAN cables etc. immitting signals and hindering tel signals,
inspite of insulation there still exists some disturbance.[/b]

Problem with u is that u start posting without first comprehending what is written

U are defining SNR, and i have defined SNR margin as reported by the modem

"An explanation of SNR and SNR Margin *

The SNR Margin is not the same as the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), although it is related.

The SNR is the signal-to-noise ratio. It is the ratio between the strength of the signal and the background noise on the line and is universally expressed as a logarithmic ratio (decibels or dB).
For a given line the SNR remains essentially fixed whatever the speed you are running.

ADSL routers and modems actually report the SNR Margin, and the term used to describe this varies but is generally “SNR Margin”, “Noise Margin”, “Margin”, “Receive Margin”.

The SNR Margin is the difference between the actual SNR and the SNR required to run at a given speed.
For example, if you need 20dB of SNR to run at 512Kbps, and the actual line SNR is 45dB, then the SNR Margin is 25dB.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"What's an SNR margin
The SNR margin is the difference in what the current SNR is and what the potential SNR is, basically a safety margin to make sure you are louder than any spikes in background noise. The target SNR (what is negotiates sync at) is set by your ISP and we change between speed settings. As long as you're SNR is greater than 1 there isn't a problem.

Ashish there are a lot of factors involved when we talk abt ADSL. Though u are quite near the lower limits of SNR margin, its not necessary that u will have an unreliable connection. In some cases SNR could be high but line attenuation also could be very high resulting in disconnections. In other cases line att could be high but SNR could be low leading to connectivity probs. Ur modem also plays an imp role some brands can hang to connections having SNR margin as low as 2 or 3, others might disconnect even at 7 or 8. So bottom line is that as long as it doesnt disconnect dont worry abt it.[/b]

thanx......

ya, i've observed the same.... many people complains that even though they r on 12 - 14 SNR margin, they get frequent disconnections.......... many things r needed to be considered......

thanx once again.........

i emailed the MTNL guys as my speed is not upgraded - they replied - its under process....... pataa nahi kitna time lagegaa..... buss jaldi se ho jayeee......

I stay at Charkop, Kandivali - 1/2 Km from exchange. Though my B/W has been upgraded I still get intermittent disconnections. These disconnections are very random in nature & also mostly happen during incoming & outgoing calls. I hv started observing the ADSL stats. But the SNR Margin & other factors do not vary widely. My SNR Margin is mostly 20+.

after i switched to multimode (or g.dmt), my triband no longer disconnectsexcept when call comes or are made. but that is only if phone is not connectedto splitter (phone keeps moving from 1 room to other). if its connected to splitterit does not d/c.now i am planning to buy an additional splitter which will go in other room.so mostly i should get rid of d/c problems forever.

I've changed the modulation from Multi-mode to G.dmt and the disconnections seemed to have stopped. Speeds remain the same (between 230 to 245KBps) with either modulation type.

the disconnections still continue for me, in all modes...limeman came 2nd time today after a wk and claimed to have fixed another cable fault downstairs. the idiot prolly doesn't do shit...constantly eating paan, and the shit still disconnects. the baabu actually has the audacity to ask me if i could please tell the mtnl people that everything is fixed when they call to check if triband problem is solved, so that he doesn't get into trouble!!!!!!! i was like wtf!! went to the exchange and complained to some stupid manager. he's supposedly sending someone more qualified than a lineman over on wed/thu. will update u guys!! mtnl linemen are loons!

Phew. I'm totally bugged with the conversion to 2Mbps on my triband. I have a 590U and I am from the 'burb of Borivli in Bombay.

I am unable to connect to the internet anytime after 12.00am in the night. This has been happening for the past one week. During the day it works perfectly fine. Any clue what's happening?[/b]

Try Dialing 1504 or some other toll free number once u switch on the modem.
I had the same problem in the same 'burb or Borivali(w),but now once i switch on the modem at startup,I dial 1504 and Hey Presto,My ADSL logs on

Tha same happens to me 1504 tech told me this is b'coz of 'line problem' & noted my complaint. Rang up 1504 as I could not connect for 17 minutes. They admitted that they had a problem and are working on the 'up gradation'. Incidentally the http://register.mtnl.net.in/ site will be down today 'as work is going on', such hard working guys' :)

register.mtnl.net.in is down most of the times from abt 2-3 weeks!btw did u ask them that wud data downloads will be counted when work is in progress?!LOL.. hope it wont!

It seems that our meters would still be turning  He even helpfully asked me if there was an 'emergency'
he could check my balance for me, to which I repled 'with this type of connectivity theres no way I will breach my limit of 1 GB :D
