Airtel is now a Global Company. So they had created the new domains for each country. Airtel.com will show you this

i thought they had to snatch the domain from some squatter based in mumbai. vodafone discarded the domain. airtel was too busy buying companies in africa to get it from them directly!

that was probably his original plan. i would assume that he was planning to sell it to someone else who might have the resources to take on airtel in the domain dispute court. but airtel caught up with him fast enough and he had to give up control of the domain name. if he himself was planning to take on airtel? he was definitely an idiot.
