Androids in space: Nexus One blasts into orbit this month | ZDNet

The University of Surrey's Space Centre (SSC) will send the first smartphone into space later this month.

The phone, a Google Android-powered (and branded) Nexus One device, is set to blast into space on 25 February and will be used see if it can reduce the cost and complexity of space missions by performing in-orbit functions.

The handset will be carried on the STRaND-1 satellite. STRaND-1 will launch from Sriharikota in India, and is set to achieve another world first by taking along the first 3D-printed object to go into orbit.

Why they are sending a 3 yr old phone. why not the latest quad-core ones like nexus 4 or s3.It would have been a better device to test out in-orbit functions than a single core device.

because this program has been under development for a couple of years now and they picked n1 as their base device for all the software modules?they could have taken a dual quad core laptop considering they are also quite portable. i do not think they are looking for a powerful device. they are more like looking into the whole concept of using simple devices to do complicated tasks. :\

May be when they started the project,HTC Nexus One was the prevailing android. HTC build quality is built to last in space defenitely.I still have it along with Nexus-s & Galaxy Nexus. Samsung quality of Nexus devices is not good as their own GALAXY series.

The built and the exposure to direct sunlight, working in extreme temp etc. proll trumped the processing power.

Yeah, same was the case with Curiosity's MAHLI Camera which was sent recently but had just 2MP Camera.
Curious why Mars rover has such a dinky camera and computer?
