Nokia n79 on dual mode(gsm/umts) network trouble?

Having used 3G on both Nokia 5800 and Nokia E52, here are some points. Both the above have 3 modes (GSM, Dual, UMTS).Selecting GSM is best when you dont have a 3G connection.Dual mode when selected presents a problem and drop in battery life as the handset constanly tries to search for a UMTS/3G signal.UMTS- Again straight forward like GSM, stays put on UMTS, and if there is no 3G signal, your phone does not switch to normal GSM. Used 3G in blr (cellone test SIM) for 10-12 days. Had the same issue(noise) when i enabled UMTS, as the signal level was not all that great.Battery life goes for a toss with 3G:@

very true about battery life, if u check talk time of any 3g phone on gsmarena, they are less compared to gsm talk time of same phone

3G phones need powerful battery, similar to CDMA handsets.

yep, there was a firmware upgrade available on air and i had installed the same just hours back.. will have to find someone to talk to and test tomo .. will post the results once done...!

It is just an individual house that i live in.. Is the above equipment different from the one that is currently in place?

----------

Also, this should mean that the problem should not be present when i use the phone outside in the open roads where there is 100% signal reception, correct?
Let me test this as well and update..

Yup, problem should not be there in 100% signal areas
what i meant by BTS/repeater is basically a new Cell tower in your area

Thanks for sharing that info. Have switched to GSM from the dual mode now. But then you had that noise on a 3g network which is quite different from my problem of the same noise on a GSM network.. blame on the phone's hardware?

Installing a tower is next to impossible as per talk i had with vodafone.. since they need atleast several hundreds of network complaints from the same area before even devising a plan to install one...

With regards to 100% signal areas, need to test yet. So far couple of calls made indoor after the firmware update. Problem was not to be seen. Lets hope the firmware update has fixed it.. :-)

Update! : Been using the phone for hours until now and the problem hasn't re-occured..! Hopefully, the firmware update has fixed things up..! Thank you all !
