Online Stores that ship to India and accept payment in USD

umm..abt friends and relatives in US/other countries.. on more than one occasion i have seen such strenuous checking by customs guys at the new intl terminal at Delhi..almost every passenger had to open his suitcase and get it examined while walking thru the green channel..looks like they have become more proactive at the new terminal

Well at-lest I have not seen them opening bags for last couple of times at T3 .. might be cos I was always there at 2-3 AM

AFAIK you are allowed to carry one laptop/tablet without paying any duty. or maybe it was something else.

i had got my ipad from the US only. the guy wasn't checked though.

you'll be in trouble if you are carrying seal pack new tablet or laptop .. if it is open .. out of the packing .. then you are allowed to carry a Laptop and a tablet ..

Ok, it seems there is no choice at all. The Verizon one is indeed locked, because there is no place for a SIM card at all. Its designed completely around Verizon's network and therefore will work only in the US with Verizon.

The AT&T one is indeed unlocked and will work anywhere in the world.

The only iPad 2 that is carrier-locked is the Verizon model, and it's only "locked" to Verizon because its 3G chipset won't work on a GSM network. If you buy the UMTS/GSM or "AT&T" model of iPad 2 on March 11, you will be able to use it almost anywhere in the world without having to worry about being locked to one specific carrier. It's unclear why Apple chose to word things the way it did on the Canadian site -- no other country's site contains similar verbiage, at least not in any of the languages I can read -- but both the Canadian carriers and Apple itself have confirmed that the UMTS/GSM iPad 2 won't be locked in to any specific carrier when you buy it.

umm...one laptop is obviously allowed abt the second one iam not so sure..apart from that, if i remember correctly, each pax can bring in goods worth 15000/- bucks free..apparently allowance depends on what nationality u are and also which country you are coming from..problem is that they dont value the goods as per the invoice u show them..and they can say its undervalued to evade duty and charge duty on the price that they reckon it should cost in india..

point is even by getting goods thru relatives/friends there is this sort of a sword that keeps hanging over ur head till the guy clears the green channel

about the ipad... this would be a bad time to get it. the new one might be launched as early as next month. just saying.

The iPad launch cycle is around Feb/Mar every year. So I wouldn't expect a new one anytime this year. Apple is busy with the iPod/iPhone release right now.

and iPhone was supposed to arrive in July this year right? Apple is planning a full on attack this american holiday season with a new ipad, iphone and possibly ipod touch. ipad 2 was an incremental update. the next one should be a major one. and they would need a new one for the holiday season looking at multiple generations of android tablets that are now available and would arrive in the market before december. google might be planning to launch android 4 based tablets around the same time. if it turns out to be half as good as people expect it to be, iPad might finally have a solid challenger in the market.

I might disagree with that. I don't care what stupid rumor sites spew all over the Internet everyday, Apple follows a very strict schedule with these products. Also, the iPad 2 was released in March end, which means it been barely 3-4 months since its release. It is way too early for Apple to release a new iPad, it does not make sense for them financially. They have to let their stocks of the iPad 2 sell for at least a solid 8-10 months, after which they can think of releasing a new product. There is also no evidence of the claim that the next release is going to a major release rather than incremental. With the iPhone, we had 2 incremental releases before we got a major release (iPhone, then iPhone 3G, the iPhone 3GS, finally iPhone 4).

ahem. keep dreaming. Apple cannot continue with just one model launch per year looking at the way android is growing. especially in the tablet market. ipad would get an update before the holiday season. that is sure. as for their tight schedule... iPhone 4s/5 did not follow the schedule of june-july launch. you want to live in denial just to justify the purchase of an ipad 2 now? no problems with that. as for apple rumors, they have failed to keep anything secretive over the last year or so. except for a few tiny things here and there, everything has been predicted well in advance by the industry analysts.

For custom here is the rule if you travelling from Foreign country--

1. One laptop is allowed without any question / per passenger.
2. You can carry 2nd laptop provided you show them the proof that one of your laptop is provided by employer. You need to show it in written if asked. Usually they don't ask for written proof but sometime they do.
3. Netbooks are considered same as laptops.
4. Tablets - usually they consider it as any other gadget.
5. You are allowed to bring 25000/- rs worth of electronics or other items without paying Custom. (someone mentioned 15000, but it is actually 25k)

One more thing about checking even if you passing through green channel and no one is asking you to open the baggage, custom people know what you carrying. All baggage are scanned through backdoor scanner before being returned to you. Sometime these scanner guys put mark on bags which they feel suspicious and if you carrying that in Green channel Custom will stop you.

Sometime they stop and scan almost every bag based on information they received from their sources.

I and my friend have brought about 8 laptops in last 2 years from US to india, and several times we carried 2 laptop and never paid any duty.
All my relatives are happily enjoying 18K laptops which cost around 30K in india.
