it is more distributed because google has more resources compared to opendns. so you are likely to get access to a server that is nearer to your location. it is a pure dns service unlike opendns which is more of a managed dns platform. so you are not going to get domain blocked by the previous owner of this IP. it does not show ads when you land on a dead domain.
I think they have enough business customers today that they can ignore the little income they were probably making from ads. The data from more users who would now use their services would probably be worth the switch.
Just sharing, If anyone want to check fastest DNS for his/her then download a free software DNSjumper. With that software you can compare different site response time. Bsnl provide two DNS, I found one is preety fast but other is slow so i use google DNS instead of slow one.
