MUMBAI: Four months after the launch of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) home league, Indian Premier League (IPL), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to follow suit. Soon, you’ll be able to witness a Pakistan 20:20 tournament, on the lines of IPL.

The BCCI is counselling and aiding the PCB in finalising the blue print. The move signals IPL’s broader vision of taking the format international, known as the Champions 20:20 League. Pakistan’s home league is tipped to be launched by the end of 2008. PCB director, marketing and communications, Ehsan Hameed Malik told ET: “We have started the process only about two months ago. However, we have a long way to go. Considering our busy schedule, we plan to launch it by the end of 2008 or early 2009.

The name of the league will be similar on the lines of IPL.”“We are happy that other countries are following our model, and I’m sure this is the right model for all countries to follow,” said Lalit Modi, vice-president, BCCI and the man who is driving IPL. When queried about when the idea actually took shape, he said, “When we were launching IPL in India, the PCB sent its officials to India to visit us and study our model. They were part of all our initial IPL presentations and IMG, which is our partner, is also consulting them on the league dynamics.”

The initiative is being personally driven by the PCB chairman Nasin Ashraf, who, on the request of BCCI, has been working closely with IMG. “The BCCI and the IPL board have been very helpful. In fact, IMG has been consulting us on the request of the BCCI,” Mr Malik added.

The launch of the Pakistan league is being viewed by both the boards as move to take the game to a new level of cricket, and more importantly a new height of Indo-Pak contest. The bigger plan will take shape when the top two teams of the IPL will clash with the top two teams of the Pakistan league, when the format goes international.

This will account for big money across all facets of the game. The move will also give cricket more impetus as the traditional ‘India-Pakistan’ match has always been a heady mix, whether for the cricket fans or for the stakeholders of the game.

ICL / IPL and now say PPLi hope too much cricket dose doesnt kill excitement.

I think this strategy will be adapted by other boards too in the future. Like football leagues.

Where are they going to conduct their 20 matches...in pak or dubai ?Who will go and play in pakistan...even a team like bangladesh is not going there to play cricket...

'He also said that there are parties who have offered to bring in "foreign players as a part of their support to Pakistan".'There might be some folks who might want to earn a few bucks or boost their ratings in hope of getting more lucrative deals from leagues like IPL & Big Bash after doing well here, Also international hopefuls, or folks from counties like Alfonso Thomas , Mascarenhas etc.

Man you cant run a show with 1 or 2 who are not showcase piece...What happened to ICL...Big Bash is a great hit Australia because of money and international players playing in those tournaments...

Agree, Never said it will be a success :D , or even start for that matter. But, if it starts, it may get a few people to reconsider Pakistan as a place to tour in future.

And coming back to Bangladesh players, the court may not be able to intervene when an individual player decides to go.. Also SL board was planning a league - An exchange deal may be worked out to represent players from either countries to be available for the others' league. Also, Pakistan's people have not seen international folks , their own stars in grounds for some time now (ignoring no-fanfare domestic matches) , so it may just work out - Provided they can get some international stars to come there.
