umm why not? i give him the figures. the check. he files the tax. and the return. i get my receipt. as simple as that?

i guess they would have a connection provided in a government office in the region like the post office. and people would be able to fix their taxes from those places.

Actually, he's right.
People in villages will not have to go online themselves.
They'd simply have to provide the figures to something like "community CA's"
who will then upload the returns.

@Sushubhur dad cant sign on ur behalf.he can file without digital signature though and u will get receipt but then u will have to file the receipt (with barcode) physically too.

I took care of returns yesterday. Filing in paper is actually cheaper [and free if someone can stand in queue].

Had to pay 200 Rs to CA, ONLY thing I needed was a copy of Form 16, CA's Guy came to office, filled the whole form (copied things from form 16). All I had to do was to sign and hand over 200 Rs.

Got acknowledgement in Office itself...

For filing online, I will have to pay 250 for Digital Cert. So, paper returns are more convenient and cheaper too.

They'd simply have to provide the figures to something like "community CA's" who will then upload the returns.

And will they do it for free?

Govt can't make this fee mandatory.

Filing returns IS free, I did that for first two years as new tax payee myself in early 90s.

Providing Value added services and charging for them is one thing.

Making then mandatory and removing FREE way is another.

From the page you linked
Under this scheme an eligible person, at his option, may furnish his return...
Emphasis not mine.

So, even they are trying to highlight its an "option" not a compulsion.

i am not sure but my dad's CA has been filing my returns and taxes since the past 2-3 years. i give him the money/check for the taxes. and i give him the statements my nana prepares from my bank statements. and i get my return filed. :D

ok looks like there is a confusion.. when u used term CA.. u meant chartered accountant... but since we all were referring to digital signature/certificate which is also referred as CA(authority certificate).. i thought u were going to use ur dad's certificate (CA)look at the way our conversation makes sense for each CA!!

umm right i was talking abt the chartered accountant wala CA. i dont know abt any certificates or stuff. i have never filed my returns manually. :p
