the only thing they can do now is to give out stb on rental. charge 50 rupees extra and let the user live in peace. replace it with newer models as and when they go bad or become outdated.

oh no 50 rupees rent ? then monthly cost will go up it is better to give 1000 or 1500 upfront for STB and manage monthly payment of Rs.300 instead of Rs.350 or so......

well the point is that the STB becomes their property. the user has the option to move on to a rival company any given day. with prepayment of the STB, you are stuck with the company or you lose the entire deposit.

and since you usually end up paying for a full year with DTH connections, it is not that big of a deal to pay 350 a month without any initial costing.
