I think it is a case of poor peering with the AWS by ISP of OP.
I think we need more info from OP.
I can watch the videos in hd,even on my bsnl ftth.
So,i ain't in complete agreement with you.
Mine goes through Mumbai EXTREME IX.
Though reddit is hosted on AWS they use some sort of complicated architecture with a CDN so its quite difficult to find the root cause of the issue.
Reddit routing is generally shit for India. People on r/india keep on moaning about it day in and day out. I have had moderate success with using WARP and PIA VPNs.
For me images load fine. Videos are a problem. It was good when they relied on third party services. Now most content is hosted on their own servers which doesn't help.
yes the self hosted content is the problem specially videos. Most of the time they are not even very high quality, most are ripped from some other place.
Images usually load fine on first page but as you open a thread depending upon image it will take a sec to minute to load.
This is trace route to their two servers used for serving media, looks fine to me.
there is no consistency sometime it works, their system automatically degrades the video quality even if I select manually HD quality its messed up.
P.S. for me all media is served from their fastly BOM cdn server and routing to it looks so I don't understand what is the problem. I think its over optimization that they keep serving you shit quality from cache.
