Thanks Suraj. I have it working now, although not through a switch. This is how I did it:
1. Connected the broadband cable into the WAN port of the router.
2. Connected one lan port of the Router to a PC and configured the router, without PPPoE with Static IP addresses provided by Sify. I enabled DHCP server on the router.
3. Connected the second lan port of the router to a D-Link 16 port switch. When I connected one more PC through the switch, it could not get an IP address. I ensured that the setup is all correct in Network Connections, but still couldnt get an IP address. I tried IPCONFIG release/renew but still didnt work. But when I connect this PC to the router directly it immediately gets an IP address through DHCP.
I have a total of 4 PC's plus a laptop and I need to use the switch. Any idea's why DHCP is unable to assign an IP address when I connect through a switch?
Many thanks in advance,
Anant.

whats the model of the D-Link switch?

Does the Dlink switch have an uplink port?

You need one of the router port to be connected with the switches uplink port using a straight thru cable.

If the switch does not have an uplink port then use a crossover cable to connect the switch and the router.

Thanks Suraj. I have it working now. The cable had a problem it seems, as the switch does not have an uplink port. Its working fine now. Only problem, when I try and start the dialer, I get a message BB109. But when I turn the switch off and start the dialar, I can connect normally. I am too much of a novice to get whats up, but as long as it works when I turn the switch off just for an instant I'm happy.
Many Thanks to all for your help.
Anant.

Strange. As BB109 is "Error BB109. We have diagonised that you have configured the gateway in multiple LAN Cards in your network settings."How does a switch get detected in that way? That error pops up if two gateways are specifed for the PC. Either if you have two active network cards, or your dialup connection is active.
