here is another example:

You have an iPod you are stuck with it if you purchase music from Apple's store.

that is pretty much irrelevant now that apple and Amazon are selling drm free music which plays on all ipods.

you do not have to buy music from apple itunes if you own an ipod.

mail and chat, microsoft already dominate google in that.

Pray tell how? Gmail is eons ahead of hotmail. ANd I can't remember the last time I used MSN messenger. All of my friends are now on GChat.

would you call yourself a regular web user who is not technically inclined?

i am talking about raw members of the webmail services. people who want their embedded images, emoticons in emails and other stuff. they do not like or use gmail. still.

here is a recent sample of their userbases:

also remember that the dumb members are the ones who are more likely to click on ads. not people like us.

gmail is giving more than 6GB at the moment but i doubt they are anywhere close to the userbase of yahoo mail or live hotmail.

yes hotmail is there from 1993-1994 or so and yahoo from abt 1997. and gmail/gtalk are far behind.compared to yahoo mail/messenger i still dislike gmail/gtalk. MSN hotmail/messenger are almost dead for me but since a/c is there, i still check once in 15days or so.btw that image doesnt tell complete truth and its old news. gmail can also be accessed from outlook and OE.plus yahoo now gives unlimited space.

lets not forget hotmail was bought not developed by MS.MSDOS was bought not developed by MSOffice (Word, Excel etc) were bought separately and sold together as Office, not developed by MS :)Imagine all the poor open source zealot sods working for Yahoo if they were to become MS employees... how tragic for 'emAh I forgot to add (I believe) that Windows came about from code developed with the help of IBM (OS/2) and of course we know today's GUI was copied off Apple/xerox work...

Actually every gmail user is also a yahoo/hotmail user who switched to gmail......but still keeps his yahoo/hotmail

lets not forget that microsoft can be considered more of a marketing and strategy company rather than an innovative software developer.

let's also not forget that yahoo used to be powered by google search engine. not sure about msn before they both started developing their own technologies.

lets also not forget that yahoo is firing around 1000 people working in the company.

and lets not forget that google would love to hire the good cream at yahoo who would be pissed of if the deal goes ahead. ;)

and every google user is most likely a former yahoo search engine user as well... :)

this dude works at yahoo but run google adsense ads.

lets not forget hotmail was bought not developed by MS.

MSDOS was bought not developed by MS

Ah I forgot to add (I believe) that Windows came about from code developed with the help of IBM (OS/2) and of course we know today's GUI was copied off Apple/xerox work...
Huh!some people here knows the reality afterall!
Yes,M$ is a marketing company ran by (still) the brilliant marketing genius called bill gates :P no innovation comes from M$ though.even if something comes,it will be some monopolistic/platform-binding ideas.for eg:directx, silverlight(hopes it bombed!)

most experts agree on one point. microsoft excel is something that they picked up from some other entity but made something special out of it. no rival to excel for people who have to deal with numbers all day long.
