yes excel is probably only really great thing from MS.but portal wise yahoo is far far ahead of google. google beats yahoo only in search, but in that too off-late i have started to see many results not coming on google but yahoo. (mostly for uncommon terms)google adsense is also very good (i have not used it at all) but know that its leader. but yahoo does not really seem to be in ad technology

the main aspect of this deal is search and advertising. the markets today with maximum revenue potential. yahoo has web properties, web traffic, and advertising technologies. the combined market share of yahoo and msn search would be better than their individual market share. but it would still be half of google. yahoo dominates google in several markets. that includes: traffic (coz google does not have a web portal of sort), image hosting (flickr), news (yahoo news get more traffic) and i believe finance too. already discussed yahoo mail and messaging.the problem is that the money lies in advertising and not these services. and thats where google is dominating and concentrating.the funny thing is that if the merger goes ahead, it would give google more advantage as they would still be focused on enhancing their services while yahoo and microsoft would remain busy integrating theirs for the coming months and perhaps years.

Ewwww. Microsoft banned free chat rooms in 2002 and started charging for their use in North America, Europe and East Asia. Users from other countries couldn't chat at all on MSN rooms and were left in the lurch. Disgruntled I shifted to Yahoo chat rooms back then. Microsoft's hotmail is so crappy that it deletes your emails if you don't check your account for a month. I always use Yahoo mail over hotmail because of this reason. So what's so great about MS acquiring Yahoo? I quite like the Yahoo brand actually and the least that MS can do is leave the Yahoo brand name and logo untouched, if it acquires Yahoo.

worst ever thing abt hotmail is that it keeps sent item for 30days only and then deletes it!!now why wud one want to do that? even in age where other providers give unlimited space.

In my opinion, Microsoft is good in two things - desktop software and developer tools + documentation. I don't even want to talk about hotmail. Stopped using it (didn't use it much anyway) after failing to login in three successive times on firefox.

prakash_mvpa, could you tone down the "Microsoft is 3\/1|_" slogans? I too am a staunch GNU / Linux supporter but there is no need to spread such slur.

Good deal but I dont think Microsoft will purchase Yahoo! Guess yahoo is kinda committed a whole lot to OpenSource and they use a whole LOT of OSS and technologies that it'll be hard for M$ to "clean" out all the code. As someone said, they'll probably rewrite whole of Yahoo! services in .NET which will be insanity or else stick with OSS which is ALSO insanity! :P

Yahoo to take some time before responding to Microsoft buyout offerMicrosoft recently surprised the market by announcing a bid for the internet media giant Yahoo. Yahoo has been struggling in the recent times with Google staying the leader in the search engine and online advertising markets. The webâs most popular destination has now said that it [...]
