Anybody here on Slackware? Just installed it, but am not quite sure I would be able to survive long in the absence of a package manager. I'm addicted to Synaptic.

Quite a few initial problems I'm facing.

a) Mouse scroll not working.
b) Don't know how to install from .tar.gz
c) Resolution ****ed up, 1024X768, refresh rate 60 Hz.

Anyway, heres a screen -

hehe, slackware.

its an austere distro for austere users :)

its supposed to be good for people to learn linux the long hard way :) you should be reading lots of online HOWTOs for your problems...

it was the first distro i used (and enjoyed struggling with) back in the mid-90s before switching over to redhat, then mandrake, then suse and finally on ubuntu these days...

There is The Slackware Linux Project: Frequently Asked Questions which mentions the LDP...

Same here.. was the first distro that I got. It used to come with PC Quest CDs. Needed to create two boot floppies for installs. I am using it to date along with other distros. Main OS is windows though. It is THE distro if you ever plan to be in some field related to software development since it is quite close to what you will see on servers.

PCLinux/Ubuntu and Slackware address different needs. Slackware is geared more towards retaining Unix-Like simpleness. PCLinux is more towards making Linux easier for masses.
